CodeHub Python Dojo

What is a Code Dojo?

People who train in martial arts attend dojos where they practice and try to expand their skills and achieve self-improvement. The idea is that in order to become an expert in anything you need to repeatedly perform *deliberate practice*. Dojos are also places where people of variable experience levels can engage with each other, share knowledge and give support.

A Code Dojo tries to take those ideas and apply them in the process of master programming languages. Our version of the Dojo was inspired by the London Python Dojo (http://ldnpydojo.org.uk/).

South West Founders

South West Founders is a monthly meet-up for people based in the South-West who have been, are, or want to be tech start-up founders. The aim is to connect local entrepreneurs with co-founders and other like-minded people as well as tech investors to create an informal support network.

The focus is on scalable and disruptive tech businesses. Entrepreneurs and tech investors are welcome with open arms, but discourage freelancers, consultants, lawyers and other service providers unless they have a genuine interest in founding or mentoring start-up businesses. We have a strict 'no selling' rule at our events.

The format of the meet-ups is very casual. Turn up, sign in and get a name badge which will tell everybody who you are and what you've come for.

Lunch and Learn: Designing games to understand complex systems

You were once a child who liked playing games and making up your own rules. Then you grew up, got a job and accepted the ridiculous notion that games are a waste of #productivity.

Hold that thought, because Matteo Menapace (videogames designer in residence at the V&A) is here to show us how games can be used to facilitate structured playful conversations around difficult topics (such as “the economy”) and how games can make complex systems understandable.

Join us for a Designing games to understand complex systems lunch&learn with Matteo on Friday November 16th at Framework coworking in Bristol. Get your free tickets here.

idiscover360: How To Use Failure And Handle Fear?

We are told failure is our greatest teacher. We are told we should fail and learn from our failures, but it is often hard to embody this in our day-to-day life. More importantly, unexamined failures can often lead to fear of repetition of one's mistakes in the future, or fear of experiencing similar setbacks.

Dealing powerfully with failures and fears, these paper tigers that slow us down and, at times, paralyse us, is a crucial skill to have in the world of business and entrepreneurship. Together we will explore how to handle both past failures and future fears in a powerful and effective way.

Join us for short talk, discussion and networking.

Getting into Test Driven Development - Part 1 : TDD workflow

Workshop with Stephen Leach

- This workshop gets developers into the test-driven mindset and having fun learning how to drive development by implementing step-by-step scenarios using a structured set of activities.

To explore what this means in practice, there will be hands-on exercises, so bring your laptop.

The exercises can be done using a platform of your choice. However, Steve would like to focus on a language prevelant among attendees when talking about the examples, therefore we will ask you about your preferred language on sign-up.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is for you if you have heard about TDD and want to really understand what the deal is, without making the huge investment in time needed to be an expert. It is about understanding the whole TDD picture and not worry about the mechanics.

All skill levels welcome. We are also looking for mentors.
